About us

Connecting the Unconnectable — From Space

Lacuna Space provides ultra-efficient, direct-to-satellite connectivity for IoT sensors; enabling data transmission from even the most remote places on Earth.

Who we are

Lacuna Space is a UK-headquartered satellite communications company delivering low-power, direct-to-orbit IoT connectivity using our proprietary LoneWhisper® technology.

From environmental sensors in Arctic tundra to smart meters in off-grid villages, we connect devices where terrestrial networks can’t — reliably, affordably, and at scale.

Our solution is the result of over eight years of development, €20 million+ in investment, and collaboration with space and technology leaders across Europe. Today, Lacuna supports customers in smart agriculture, environmental science, utilities, marine monitoring, and more.

Where the magic happens!

Our headquarters is located at the Harwell Space Cluster in Oxfordshire — the heart of the UK’s space innovation ecosystem and home to the European Space Agency’s Centre for Space Applications and Telecommunications (ECSAT).

This location puts us at the centre of global satellite innovation, surrounded by partners, collaborators, and a thriving start-up community.

We also have a wholly-owned subsidiary in the Netherlands, extending our reach into Amsterdam’s thriving IoT developer community.

European Space Agency

Many thanks to the European Space Agency, in particular their ARTES team who provided the technical and business support and to help us on our way, and were ready to embrace smaller, cheaper, faster approaches to accessing space.

The UK Space Agency was also instrumental in funding some of the early risk reduction activities, which then enabled us to bring in third-party investors to the business.

Eesa Business Incubation Centre - United Kingdom
ESA Business incubation centre UK

It seems like a whole life-time ago, but back in March 2017, the ESA Business Incubation Centre in the UK was the first to support us at our proof-of-concept stage. Industry experts told us it couldn’t be done. We thought otherwise and ESA helped us prove it. So much has happened since then!
