Lacuna Opens D2D Satellite IoT Network for Global Collaboration

Pioneering satellite company invites partners to plug into its proven LoneWhisper® Direct-to-Device (D2D) IoT system – with early adopters like dstelecom already demonstrating results.
Harwell, Oxforshire, 7th January 2026 – Lacuna Space today announced it is opening its LoneWhisper® Direct-to-Device (D2D) satellite IoT technology for collaboration through the Lacuna Network, inviting other operators, agencies, and nations to join a shared global system that already spans every continent.
“This is how we accelerate the next generation of D2D services, by working together,” said Rob Spurrett, CEO of Lacuna Space. “Partners can now fly our proven LoneWhisper® gateway payloads on their own satellites and instantly join an established global network for low-power IoT connectivity.”
Most of the world remains beyond the reach of terrestrial networks, yet the sensors monitoring our farms, forests, oceans and infrastructure need to connect from anywhere. Satellite IoT, and especially direct-to-device connectivity, makes that possible.
The Lacuna Network and LoneWhisper® System
After nearly a decade and a €20M investment, Lacuna has perfected LoneWhisper®, its implementation of LoRa over satellite. The system includes advanced almanac provisioning and a global ground message broker, ensuring seamless message delivery between devices and applications, regardless of which operator’s satellites are overhead.
Now, Lacuna is making this technology available for others to adopt and integrate. Partners can fly Lacuna’s IoT gateway payloads on their own satellites and plug straight into the shared Lacuna Network: an open, cooperative architecture that grows stronger with every new participant.
Each additional satellite expands global coverage. Participants immediately benefit from Lacuna’s operational constellation through shared coverage: each network extends connectivity for the other, much like mobile roaming.
Early Partners Already Benefiting
Among the first partners leveraging the Lacuna Network is dstelecom, who are using the shared system to pilot new IoT services for Portugal’s coastal waters and remote rural communities in the north.
“Through Lacuna’s collaborative model, we’ve been able to demonstrate real IoT applications well in advance of deploying our own satellites with Lacuna payloads,” said Ricardo Salgado, CEO of dstelecom. “This approach allows us to extend connectivity across land and sea, accelerating innovation while reducing cost and risk.”
Proven in Orbit, Ready to Scale
The Lacuna Network is live today – not a concept.
- Multiple payloads launched with 100% success
- Over 4 million messages delivered
- Active users in agriculture, environmental monitoring, logistics, and infrastructure
Partners can immediately integrate and adapt the system to their markets, leveraging a mature technology base while focusing on their own customer applications and device ecosystems.
Strategic Advantages
- Faster deployment – Begin IoT services now by roaming on Lacuna’s network before your own satellites are deployed.
- Lower capital outlay – Use proven LoneWhisper® gateway technology and software without building from scratch.
- Lower risk – Built on open LoRaWAN standards, ensuring interoperability and long-term sustainability and proven in orbit over almost a decade of development and trials.
Building a Shared D2D Future
Many companies have experimented with LoRa or D2D IoT from space, but none have achieved commercial-scale viability like Lacuna. The difference lies in the huge message-handling capacity of Lacuna’s IoT satellite gateway, which transforms the economics of Direct-to-Device connectivity.
By partnering with Lacuna, you gain immediate access to a €20M technology investment and nearly a decade of real-world testing, trials, and refinement. This isn’t a prototype, it is a proven, scalable platform built for open collaboration.
Together, we can expand coverage, accelerate innovation, and unlock a global IoT network that no single operator could achieve alone.
