Lacuna Space Leads Global Adoption of Open IoT Standards, Delivering on UK’s Satellite Communication Strategy

HARWELL, UK, 26th August 2025 – Lacuna Space today welcomed the publication of the LoRa Alliance’s new white paper, Extending LoRaWAN IoT Connectivity to Satellite Networks, which highlights the role of satellite operators in bringing cost-effective, low-power IoT connectivity to underserved regions across the globe.
From its inception, Lacuna Space was established with a vision to move away from proprietary satellite standards towards open, terrestrial-based standards. This approach has lowered the cost of user terminals, promoted interoperability, and accelerated adoption – a philosophy that has since become the core of the UK Space Agency’s telecommunications strategy. Recognising this early, Lacuna became a key influencer in the development of the LoRaWAN® standard for the benefit of the entire ecosystem.
The new white paper recognises Lacuna as the driving force behind extending LoRaWAN beyond terrestrial networks. As the first company to prove that LoRaWAN could scale from local coverage to global satellite reach, Lacuna has not only built a successful business but helped create an entirely new industry.
“Lacuna Space has always believed that IoT connectivity must be based on open commercial standards,” said Rob Spurrett, CEO of Lacuna Space. “Unlike 3GPP technologies, where IoT features were a late consideration, LoRaWAN was designed specifically for IoT from the ground up. Its strength comes from a vibrant global ecosystem, working to a common standard, and ensuring interoperability across terrestrial and satellite networks.”
The paper highlights the transformative role of satellite IoT in enabling critical services such as precision agriculture, environmental monitoring, utilities and metering, disaster resilience, and maritime connectivity. Lacuna’s leadership has been central to achieving international regulatory milestones, including European harmonisation of satellite IoT spectrum, paving the way for global adoption.
As the recognised leader in this sector, Lacuna Space exemplifies the innovation that makes the UK a global hub for satellite communications. With its operational constellation already delivering services worldwide, Lacuna continues to spearhead the expansion of the LoRaWAN ecosystem into space, ensuring IoT becomes truly global.
