Lacuna’s Direct-to-Sensor Satellite IoT Gets a New Name: LPD-S
HARWELL, UK, 7th July 2025 – Europe-wide regulatory approval opens the door for Lacuna Space to scale commercial service across the continent.
New Regulatory Milestone
Lacuna Space, a pioneer in direct-to-sensor satellite IoT, today welcomes the European Electronic Communications Committee’s (ECC) approval of the new Low Power Device-to-Satellite (LPD-S) regulatory framework, unlocking full commercial deployment of its LoneWhisper® technology across Europe.
This landmark decision formally enables non-terrestrial network (NTN) communication using low-power devices in the 862–870 MHz SRD band — a key enabler for ultra-low-power, battery-operated IoT sensors to connect directly to satellites without the need for ground infrastructure.
“We’re proud to have played a leading role in shaping this new LPD-S category,” said Rob Spurrett, CEO and co-founder of Lacuna Space. “After years of flight-testing and engagement with regulators, we’re excited to say: it is full-speed ahead with commercial scale deployments in Europe.”
Lacuna Space: Shaping the Future of Direct-to-Sensor Satellite IoT
Lacuna Space’s technology, developed over the last eight years with support from the UK Space Agency and the European Space Agency, has consistently demonstrated that ultra-low-power direct-to-satellite IoT can be reliable, scalable, and efficient — even in the most remote and rural areas. From river basins in Wales to agricultural fields in the Netherlands, and ocean monitoring off the coast of Portugal, Lacuna has proven that true direct-to-sensor connectivity can now operate at scale.
Industry-Wide Collaboration to Formalise LPD-S
The ECC’s decision follows a multi-year initiative by the LoRa Alliance, backed by extensive compatibility studies and stakeholder consultations, to formalize the LPD-S category. Lacuna was a driving contributor to these efforts, drawing on its unique experience as the first company to fly and operate satellite LoRa services in space.
Growing the Network
“This recognition gives clarity to innovators, customers, and regulators alike,” said Spurrett. “It means customers can now deploy with confidence, knowing the regulatory foundation is in place for long-term, large-scale growth.”
With the Call of the Wild satellite launch successfully completed and another, Wisdom of the Trail, coming later this year, Lacuna is poised to significantly expand capacity and serve more customers across Europe and beyond.
Lacuna is now welcoming new customers and partners under the new regulatory framework and offers starter kits, flexible node subscriptions, and enterprise integration support via its KonflexHub® platform.
